Focus on Community

Congregation Beth Sholom is committed to the work of Tikkun Olam, an organized effort to improve the world for all who live in it. Our Joy Greisen JEC Preschool and School Age program, which has served the greater Anchorage community for well over 30 years, exemplifies one way we strive to bring about Tikkun Olam. We are licensed to serve 124 children ages 3 months - 15 years and, though there are Jewish families enrolled and the program is supported by all in the community, over 85% of our student body is comprised of children from every Anchorage neighborhood. We welcome all families seeking quality early childhood education regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity (including gender expression) and sexual orientation. We serve families needing full and part time care and we work with families that have or are being evaluated for IEP. We accept all forms of tuition assistance and work hard to assist those needing help affording child care. In recent years, our Joy Greisen JEC Preschool and School Age program has also established inter-generational programming as a priority.

Our commitment to Tikkun Olam ~ Repair of the World ~ has driven our desire to ensure that the space is utilized in pursuit of community service and social action. We have hosted many ASD and non-profit trainings and seminars, Girl Scout troops, area homeowner's association meetings, community food drives and other civic gatherings. In addition, this space is designated as an evacuation site for Susitna Elementary school. Further, each year we hold our Mitzvah Mall in these gathering areas. This alternative "gift fair" has “vendors” representing Anchorage's non-profit community. Approximately 25 helping organizations offer participants the opportunity to donate instead of purchasing gifts during the holiday season. To date this annual effort has raised over $120,000 for local non-profits such as AK Child & Family, Alaska Bird Club, Alaska Botanical Gardens, Alaska Innocence Project, Anchorage Project Access, Anchorage School Based Health Centers, Anchorage Youth Court, Bean’s Café & Children's Lunchbox, Catholic Social Services, Equine Assisted Therapy of Alaska, Food Bank of Alaska, Friends of the Library, Turnagain Community Arts Alliance...just to name a few!

It has been our privilege and honor to work toward helping create a better Alaska over that course of time. With your partnership, we look forward to continuing to do our part in ever strengthening and serving our amazing community.
